The Beginning of The Backyard

April 18, 2013

I cannot believe I am saying this, but finally, the backyard is getting the TLC it needs. As a recap of how it has looked for the last year and a half, click HERE . The backyard has been on the back burner for many reasons. It’s out of my realm of expertise, so I cannot take matters into my own hands, which you know I would have done if I could. I have been collecting my inspiration photos so I can make a space plan, just as I would for an interior space. Once that design has been created, I will share it with you but as you can see from these photos, we are still quite far from the beautifying stages. Here I stand in my dusty backyard in my usual renovating clothes.

To start enrich this lack lustre backyard, we decided the soil needed some serious nutrients. Essentially, my house is surrounded by dense, clay like soil covering up loads of roots from the large, mature trees. Nick suggested we router tiler compost into the clay to allow for the ground to break down to create some softer, more nutrient rich soil.

Nick navigating the machine.
To save on cost, we found a local mushroom farm that has free compost for people to take. We did two runs to the farm, filling Nick’s truck bed, to create a thick, 4″ layer of compost to mix into the soil. Luckily, we had a router tiler in the family, but you can rent them from Home Depot or garden centres.

We have only worked in the compost to the area to the places we expect grass or gardens to go. The front areas closer to the house will be patio and driveway. This is what we will be working on for the next few months. I hope you enjoy outdoor renos too, because I have a lot to learn. Thank goodness I have lots of “green thumbs” around me to help, because I am going to need it.
