I recently visited a client’s house that had amazing vaulted ceilings in their living room. The beauty of these ceilings is they provide an open concept feel with a major architectural punch to the room! They create a sense of grandeur and drama by taking the space away from the typical square box. With the various slopes and peaks, people are often confused on how to paint the ceiling. Is it wall colour? Ceiling colour? A different colour?

In regards to my client’s home, I know their style is more traditional and they did not want to go to the expense of painting the entire ceiling, so we have left it white. The benefit of the white ceiling is that is keeps the brightness that the neutral hue brings to a room as well as accentuates the roof lines. Also, their ceiling was a knock down texture, so painting that would not look all that great in any colour but white!

Another option could be to paint the ceiling the same colour as the walls. This will create an illusion that the wall keeps on moving up into the ceiling. This works well for monochromatic spaces, such as the one below.

For those who want to accentuate the roof lines on another level, add a substantial crown or trim around the room where the wall and the ceiling meet! This brings some detail to the space. The ceiling now acts as it’s own separate wall and you can either paint it white or a complimentary colour from the wall. This is a nice option if you want to add more colour to your space. It will create a cozier feel than leaving the ceiling white.

A more contemporary look would be to treat the ceiling as part of the accent wall! Instead of stopping the accent colour where the ceiling meets, why not carry it all the way through? This is a riskier approach but as you can see, it look fabulous!

Perhaps I didn’t answer the question directly, but instead gave you a few ideas as to what you can do with vaulted ceilings. Not only do they not have to be white, but instead, you can create many illusions with these taller roof lines! Any thoughts on what you would do with your vaulted ceiling?
