As of yesterday, we Canadians are saying goodbye to our long time friend, the penny. Gone are the days that you hold up a line while you scramble in your wallet to find a few copper coins so that you don’t get more back in return. The new rule is to round up or round down. Out with the old coppery smelling penny, in with the new plastic dollar bills that smell like maple syrup. (It’s true. They really do smell.)

As an ode to the penny, I thought we could reflect on some ingenious and artistic ways people have embraced the penny in all it’s majesty. This cooper coin will be missed but I imagine mostly by coin collectors and youngsters who’s piggy bank is already full with them. Alas, the penny was good for more than just currency, it was also used as an art medium and inspiration.
