Designer Tip: The Art of Hanging

July 26, 2013

One of the biggest decor mistakes I encounter is art that is hung too high. It happens often. I know it seems counter intuitive to hang art low, but hear me out.

When you watch TV, what is the best level to watch the television? Generally, your eye should rest comfortably in the middle of the screen. When sitting down, this is at typically 48″ high off the floor. This allows you to relax when viewing the screen. The same principle should be applied to your art. The middle of your piece should be hung at eye level. Yes, eye level. If you are taller, get someone else to be the judge, but it is a good rule of thumb to follow.

To help you avoid this common mistake, here are some general rules/concepts to help you achieve a picture perfect look:

Art Above A Fixed Object, Furniture Or Wall Divider:

Aim for 8″-12″ above the top of the piece of furniture, whether it is a sofa, arm chair or side board. Again, make sure you use your “eye”. The centre of the piece should be at a comfortable viewing level.

Oversize it

Oversized art is a great way to create drama and impact in a room. These pieces should be hung with the centre point at eye level, or again, the 8″-12″ rule. Even if the piece only sits a few feet off the floor, that’s okay! It’s oversized anyways, right?

Line Up The Middle

When hanging photos in a grouping, try to still use the eye level principle but measuring out your entire composition. Evening out the top and bottom half will be the most pleasing to the eye. The photo below demonstrates an evenly spaced out the format, which creates a very contemporary look.

Top to Bottom

Sometimes, rules are meant to be broken. Hanging art from floor to ceiling is also a great way to squeeze every last bit of art you own into your space.
