Encaustic Cement Tiles

If you haven’t seen this latest trend in tile, it may come as a big shock to you. It has been gaining momentum over the past few years and now is becoming quite main stream. It’s the use of encaustic cement tile, or what I refer to as Moroccan tiles (because the patterns seem very Moroccan to me). Encaustic is a technique that involves wax based paint that is applied to an absorbent surface, and then heated to fuse the paint on to the surface. The motifs are typically created on cement tiles (the absorbent material) and custom colours and patterns are then created.

Often companies, such as this one, will create a custom pattern and tile of your own choosing. I love the look of these tiles!  It creates such character in each space and gives the handmade, imperfect look. It adds art and personality to your space, breaking up the hard lines that is usually created by tile. They can be used in almost any space; think bathrooms, foyers, on fireplaces and even on facades or outdoor patios. Here are some great examples of how this artsy tile can be used…
